A man wanted in the April 3 slaying of a prominent Minneapolis community activist made his first court appearance Tuesday, a day after his arrest on murder charges, authorities said.

Police say Sid Brady Strickland Green III killed Tyrone "Ty" Williams over a rental dispute between the former roommates. On the day he died, police say, Williams was talking to two men in the area of 8th and Elwood avenues N., when one of them pulled a gun and shot Williams, before fleeing in a yellow Cadillac. Police say Green owns a yellow 1987 Cadillac DeVille.

Several witnesses identified Green as the shooter, according to court filings. Detectives later inspected Green's phone records, which placed him just west of the scene minutes after the shooting, and sought access to his social media accounts in hopes of gathering clues to his whereabouts, the filings said.

Green is charged with second-degree murder.

Police caught up to Green sometime on Monday, and he was booked into the county jail in the afternoon, jail records show. He made his initial appearance in court on Tuesday afternoon, appearing before Judge Shereen Askalani, who set his bond at $1 million. No attorney for Green is listed in court records, which show that he intends to hire a private lawyer.

Police spokesman John Elder declined to discuss the arrest, saying that doing so could compromise the case against Green.

Williams, a 33-year-old father of four, was the brother of former City Council candidate Raeisha Williams.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey at the time praised Williams' activism, saying that his death would force the city to "confront our past in order to move toward a better future for all."

In a Facebook post Tuesday, former mayoral candidate Nekima Levy-Pounds said that the arrest brought "a slight measure of relief for those of us who loved Tyrone."
