A 25-year-old convicted sex offender was arrested in the middle of the night for allegedly stealing mail in western Hennepin County, authorities said Wednesday.

Jeremy Klepperich of Maple Plain has been charged with stealing mail and failing to register as a sex offender. He is suspected of stealing mail from more than two dozen victims. He remained jailed on Wednesday.

According to police, an officer arrested Klepperich about 2 a.m. Sunday on County Road 90 in Independence after a caller to 911 reported a suspicious vehicle at a mailbox.

The officer located the vehicle and saw the suspect turn off the headlights on a side road, police said. The vehicle then proceeded down the road, and the driver began throwing mail out of the window. Mail also was found on the road.

The officer stopped the vehicle and the driver was identified as Klepperich. Authorities then determined that Klepperich has been living in Maple Plain and had failed to update his predatory sex offender status.

Details about Klepperich's sex offense were not public because he committed the offense as a juvenile, but is still required to register, West Hennepin Public Safety Director Ray McCoy said.
