The Salvation Army in the Twin Cities, long known for bell-ringing during the Christmas season, is sounding an alarm about the need for volunteers to remove about 1 million sandbags from near the Red River in flood-weary Moorhead, Minn.
"The outlook for a swell of volunteers is bleak," said Annette Bauer, the charity's spokeswoman. "Help is needed."
Organizers are looking for hundreds of volunteers on Saturday to help residents remove sandbags from their property, Bauer said. People who want to help must be able to lift 25 pounds continually and "not be afraid to get muddy," she said.
Regardless of the weather, the removal mission will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Individual volunteers should report to the old Wal-Mart in Dilworth, Minn., 1711 Center Av. W. Buses will carry volunteers from there to the affected neighborhoods.
Groups already in buses can report directly to the old VFW in Moorhead, 2201 1st Av. N. and will be directed from there to where help is needed.
The Salvation Army will be in Moorhead helping feed the volunteers.
