Car fleeing police crashes on I-94

A car fleeing Minneapolis police on Friday afternoon drove onto eastbound Interstate 94 going the wrong way and crashed head-on into two cars, police said.

The pursuit began around 3:15 p.m. near 42nd and Dupont Avenues N. in Minneapolis when an officer noticed an Audi go through an intersection at about 60 miles per hour, said Minneapolis police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Garcia.

The officer turned on his lights and siren and followed the car, which turned north onto Lyndale Avenue going the wrong way on the one-way street. A supervisor ordered the chase stopped, and the officer pulled onto the overpass on 53rd Avenue N. and watched the car as it headed down an exit ramp into oncoming traffic, Garcia said.

The driver went the wrong way on I-94, dodging cars before hitting the two vehicles. It's unclear how many people were hurt, but none of the injuries appeared to be life threatening, Garcia said.

Garcia said the only thing the fleeing driver told police as he was being pulled from the vehicle was that he was racing another car.

Eastbound I-94 was closed for about 45 minutes. The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the incident.
