A Chicago man fatally shot in Robbinsdale Sunday was identified as 29-year-old Jody Tyrone Fry.

"He was an amazing guy, an awesome father who lived for his son and keeping him safe was his main goal," said Fry's cousin, Mandy Dickerson. "He was all about getting him off the streets of Chicago."

Fry had been going back and forth between Chicago and the Twin Cities over the past two years and had been living locally with his girlfriend. He wanted to get his 4-year-old son, Lil J, away from the violence in the Chicago neighborhood where the boy's mother still lives. He was looking for a job in the Twin Cities and was "making positive changes in his life and didn't want to get caught up in that lifestyle," Dickerson said.

Fry was attending a family Father's Day celebration at his aunt's house on the 5600 block of 42nd Avenue N. He was leaving the gathering just before midnight when gunfire broke out. Officers arrived and found Fry had been shot inside a vehicle, said Robbinsdale Police Chief Jim Franzen.

Fry died at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds, the Hennepin County medical examiner said.

"Jody did not deserve this," Dickerson said.

Dickerson said Fry didn't know many people in the area and would not bring "any nonsense" around his family.

Police have not made any arrests in the case. Police have ruled Fry's death a homicide and continue to investigate.

Anybody with information is asked to call Robbinsdale police at 763-531-1220.
