Shoppers visiting the Macy's department store on Nicollet Mall on its final day Sunday found empty floors, bare walls, mannequins and fixtures for sale and a padlocked jewelry store.

Macy's was the last remaining department store in the downtown Minneapolis core. Macy's announced in January that it is selling the store to a New York firm that plans to redevelop the site into a mix of office space on the upper floors and retail on the ground and skyway levels.

Mary Fehring took the train to Minneapolis from Milaca to shop at Macy's one last time Sunday. She held up her treasures for a photo on the second floor. "I found a pair of slacks and a lot of junk for 95 percent off," she said. "I wanted to buy an elf, but I didn't think we could get it back on the train."
