A Twin Cities motorist ran a stop sign in central Minnesota and fatally struck a motorist at a rural intersection, authorities said.

The collision occurred about 9 a.m. Saturday at County Roads 2 and 78 in Graham Township, according to the Benton County Sheriff's Office.

Dana M. Backstrom, 50, of nearby Foley, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Sheriff's Office said.

David C. Wiborg, 69, of Mound, was driving his SUV north on County Road 78, when he went "against a stop sign" and struck the driver's side of Backstrom's smaller vehicle, a statement from the Sheriff's Office read.

Wiborg was hospitalized with serious injuries, authorities said.

Wiborg "may have been traveling at an excessive speed," the statement continued.
