Woman walking along I-29 in N.D. after crash is hit, killed by truck

Last update: March 11, 2009 - 7:27 PM

A woman walking along a snowbound interstate halfway between Fargo and Grand Forks, N.D., was struck by a semitrailer truck and killed Tuesday, the culmination of a series of events that included a county sheriff being injured, authorities said Wednesday.

Cassandra M. DeVaney, 20, of Watertown, S.D., was struck about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and killed, the N.D. Highway Patrol reported.

According to the patrol: A car and a semi collided on northbound Interstate 29, about 8 miles north of Hillsboro. DeVaney and another 20-year-old woman in the car left their vehicle and walked toward a Traill County Sheriff's Office SUV.

A second northbound semi struck the sheriff's SUV and one of the women. Sheriff Mike Crocker suffered noncritical injuries and was hospitalized. I-29 was closed at 4 p.m. Tuesday because of snow and high winds.
