The wrong-way driver who caused a head-on crash after dark and killed two people in an SUV in Bloomington was in critical condition Sunday from his injuries, as were two of his three surviving victims, hospital officials said.

Patrick John Hayes, 34, of Savage, was being treated for severe injuries at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, while fighting for their lives in Hennepin County Medical Center were Jennifer N. Nord, 50, and daughter Olivia R. Nord, 18, both of Richfield.

Another person riding in the SUV, 2-year-old Payton J. Bailey, was last reported to be at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital in Minneapolis with serious injuries. The first emergency responder on the scene said he could not find a pulse on the child in the first minutes, according to emergency dispatch communications from that night.

Hayes was driving his car eastbound on westbound Interstate 494 about 8:25 p.m. Friday when he crashed head-on into the SUV near the Hwy. 5 entrance ramp, the State Patrol said.

Killed were the SUV's driver, Dawn M. Chiodo, 51, of Bloomington, and her daughter Dylan M. Bailey, 24, also of Bloomington. Bailey is the mother of Payton.

All of the adults in the two vehicles were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. The patrol has not disclosed whether the child was in the proper restraint device.

State records show few traffic violations for Hayes. He was found guilty of careless driving in 2003, speeding in 2006, a seat belt violation in 2010 and failure to drive with "due care" in 2015.
