A $10,000 reward is being offered in hopes of breaking a nearly three-month logjam in the investigation into the fatal shooting in north Minneapolis of a woman driving her teenage granddaughter to an appointment.

Birdell Beeks was an innocent victim caught in gang crossfire when she was shot early in the evening on May 26 while driving her minivan near 21st and Penn avenues N., police say.

As with many violent crimes in the city, police are frustrated with the lack of information coming from the public about her death.

Beeks' death prompted pleas from Mayor Betsy Hodges and other leaders for anyone with knowledge about the case to call police.

"Officers have conducted focused, directed patrol and performed additional community engagement in this area" since the 58-year-old Beeks was shot, read a statement from police, which accompanied Monday's announcement of the Crime Stoppers reward.

"Despite people being strongly encouraged to speak with officers," the police statement continued, "this case remains unsolved."
