King Boreas, Queen of Snows named

Let the carnival begin. St. Paul Winter Carnival's royalty was crowned Thursday. Christopher Schneeman of Mendota Heights was crowned King Boreas and Sarah Schweich of Minneapolis was crowned Queen of the Snows.

The royal court includes Ron Bozich of Lakeville and Ashley Rutledge of Dresser, Wis., as North Wind Prince and Princess; Chris Danielson of Little Canada and Kelly Karwoski as South Wind Prince and Princess; Chris Rucks of Blaine and Megan Andryski of New Hope as East Wind Prince and Princess; and Jeff Amland of Northfield and Emily Pearson of Mendota Heights as West Wind Prince and Princess. Shelley Kowalczuk of Woodbury will serve as royal coordinator.

The 123rd annual carnival, which runs through Feb. 1, celebrates winter with such activities as a treasure hunt, snow sculpture and ice carving contests, hockey, a 5k and half marathon, curling, gymnastics, ice boat racing and a torchlight parade.
