Oil leak blamed for stinking up NWA flight to Fargo

Last update: January 21, 2009 - 10:34 AM

The smoky odor that surfaced on a Northwest Airlines regional jet flying from the Twin Cities to Fargo is being blamed on an oil leak, an airline spokeswoman said this morning.

The 50-seat CRJ200 airliner landed safely Tuesday at the Fargo airport, and no one was hurt, said spokeswoman Leslie Parker.

An oil seal on an auxiliary power unit leaked, Parker said, causing smoke to drift into the cargo area.

The unit was replaced, she said, and the plane was put back in service.

Northwest is a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines. Delta says emergency crews met the plane on the runway as a precaution, and the 37 passengers got off the aircraft as they normally would.
