At some stations around the Twin Cities, prices have dropped below $2 a gallon from a high of more than $4 last summer.
Yes, the Twin Cities area is now home to gasoline selling for less than $2 a gallon.
Several stations are selling a gallon of unleaded regular for $1.999, according to twincitiesgasprices.com, all in the north metro area in cities such as St. Anthony, New Brighton, Columbia Heights, Roseville and northeast Minneapolis.
AAA Minneapolis spokeswoman Dawn Duffy is cautiously optimistic about where prices are headed.
"Barring any unforeseen activity," she said, listing terrorist attacks, labor strikes and hurricanes among the wild-card factors, prices "will stay at these lower levels, at least through the end of fall."
One of the stations in the sub-two-buck club is the Mini Mart on Stinson Boulevard in St. Anthony. "Everyone's been happy since it's been going down," clerk Tonette Bland said Friday morning. "Everyone was crabby and complaining before."
Mark Daly, who lives in the far north metro, said he and his wife average 30,000 miles per year each and both have to fill their tanks twice a week.
"I don't know what is with the gas prices," he said, "but I am curious to see what happens after the election. Will they go back up? I will watch and see."
