A 21-year-old man charged with manslaughter in connection with a fatal shooting at a Shakopee mobile home park Thursday told police he didn't know the gun he handled was loaded before it fired and struck a friend, according to charges.

Omar Gutierrez, of Shakopee, is charged with second-degree manslaughter by "culpable negligence creating unreasonable risk" in the death of Christopher Alvarez, 18, also of Shakopee.

"I shot him and didn't know what to do," Gutierrez said to police, according to the charges.

A Scott County judge Tuesday set Gutierrez's bail at $300,000 without conditions, or $50,000 with conditions. He is scheduled to appear in court Friday.

According to charges, Gutierrez smoked marijuana with a friend who lived at the mobile home. Gutierrez later told police that, with Alvarez nearby, he held the gun and pulled the trigger, unaware that there was a bullet inside.

Officers were called to the home after 5 p.m. Thursday. Police found Alvarez lying on a bedroom floor with a single bullet hole in his upper left chest, the charges said. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

Police arrested Gutierrez at his home around 2:10 a.m. Friday.

Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tate said police are still pursuing charges against another Shakopee resident arrested Thursday in connection with the case. The man, 19, was booked into the Scott County jail on suspicion of felony obstruction of an investigation.

Tate said the man was released from jail Monday without being charged. The Star Tribune generally does not name suspects until they are charged.
