Man held, considered homicide suspect, in fatal hit-and-run in St. Paul

Last update: October 21, 2008 - 11:59 PM

St. Paul police have arrested a motorist on suspicion of homicide; they say he struck and killed another man on a North End neighborhood street early Tuesday.

The 36-year-old suspect was being held at the Ramsey County jail in connection with the death of David Ramirez, 46, of St. Paul.

Police said Ramirez was standing next to a parked vehicle on Jessamine Avenue just east of Woodbridge Street about 4 a.m. talking to a woman both men knew. The suspect drove by, turned his vehicle around, then accelerated toward the victim and the vehicle he was standing next to, striking both, police said.

The suspect and the victim's female acquaintance then fled the scene, authorities say.

According to police, a passerby came upon the victim about an hour later, and called paramedics, who determined he'd died before they arrived.
