A car crash Sunday near City Hall in downtown Minneapolis killed the man behind the wheel.

The driver and a woman were in the car when it crashed head-on into a concrete planter about 3 p.m. Sunday, just as Vikings fans were leaving the nearby Metrodome.

Police say the car, traveling at an estimated 50 miles per hour, hit the concrete barrier, flipped over and skidded a short distance at the corner of 4th Street and 3rd Avenue S. The speed limit in the area is 30 mph.

The man was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center. The woman was seriously hurt. Names of the victims have not been released.
