Rules for recreational fires

Last update: October 12, 2008 - 11:50 PM

Most communities have safety rules about back-yard burning in fire pits and free-standing fireplaces. People who want to enjoy campfires should check local rules and whether they need annual permits. Minneapolis and St. Paul do not require a permit for recreational fires and have nearly identical restrictions:

SIZE: No more than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet high.

LOCATION: Fires within a pit or ring must be at least 25 feet from structures or combustible materials. Free-standing fires in pits or containers must be at least 15 feet from structures.

MATERIALS: No trash, brush, leaves, construction waste or paper products. Only unpainted wood that has not been treated with chemicals or preservatives. Coal and charcoal are also allowed.

HOURS: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. in Minneapolis. Hours not restricted in St. Paul as long as fire is constantly attended.

CONDUCT: Attended by a competent person, with fire extinguishing equipment readily available. No fires when wind speeds exceed 10 miles per hour.
