THE LATEST: Monday was a good day to fill up at gas stations in some northern and western Twin Cities suburbs, where stations were selling a gallon of regular-grade fuel for less than $3.

On Monday evening, the lowest prices -- $2.94 and $2.95 per gallon -- were to be found at gas stations in Buffalo and Cambridge.

Monday's national average was $3.50, according to AAA.

WHY NOW: Dawn Duffy, AAA spokeswoman, cited two reasons why gas prices were dropping. First, the price of oil dropped below $90 a barrel on world markets Monday. Second, she cited a drop in demand across the country now that the summer travel season has ended.

"We have been cutting back," Duffy said. "When gas hit $4 a gallon, we sort of drew our line in the sand and changed our habits and used less fuel."

Duffy said that travel was down 1 to 3 percent for summer's three major holidays and that the souring economy was a stark reminder for many people to conserve.
