A state trooper seated in his disabled squad car shot at a stolen pickup truck as it barreled toward him in a field north of Rochester, a shot that missed the suspect behind the wheel but persuaded him to surrender, authorities said Thursday.

The gunfire early Wednesday evening brought an end to a 10-mile chase that wound in and out of Olmsted and Goodhue counties and rolled through two fields, according to the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office.

Once the pickup, reported stolen Tuesday from a Lupient car dealership on Hwy. 52 in Rochester, came to a halt, arrested were a 25-year-old man from Plainview, Minn., who was driving, and a 23-year-old woman from Rochester.

There were no injuries in connection with the mayhem. The trooper who fired his gun was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

According to the Sheriffs' Office:

A witness spotted the stolen pickup at a Cenex gas station on Cedar Center Avenue in Oronoco. A trooper tried to stop the pickup, but it took off, prompting the pursuit.

Troopers in two squad cars saw the pickup crossing a field. The pickup tried twice to ram the troopers' vehicles. It was during one of those aggressive acts that a trooper shot at the driver. The suspect gave up once he came under fire.

The trooper who fired was still in his squad car, which had been disabled after getting entangled in downed barbed wire.

The man is being held on suspicion of fleeing police, assault, possessing stolen property and violating parole. His criminal history in Minnesota includes convictions for burglary, theft, check fraud and possessing drug paraphernalia.

The woman is being accused of violating parole. She has no serious convictions on her criminal record in Minnesota.
