New U institute will promote cultural awareness of China

Last update: September 19, 2008 - 12:05 AM

The University of Minnesota will open the state's first Confucius Institute today, to promote the study of Chinese language and culture throughout the state.

The institute -- a joint effort of the U, the Council for Chinese Language International and Capital Normal University in Beijing -- will work with both the K-12 educational system and the business community. It will be at the University International Center, 331 17th Av. SE., Minneapolis.

There are nearly 40 Confucius Institutes in the United States and nearly 250 worldwide.

"The institute will deepen our long history of educational and cultural exchange in China," University President Robert Bruininks said. "China's increasing economic, political and social influence around the globe requires engagement by people in both countries to develop greater understanding."
