A Brooklyn Park man was charged Monday with injuring his 2-month-old son, leaving the baby brain-dead.

About 12:20 a.m. Friday, Brooklyn Park police was called to an apartment regarding a baby in distress and upon arrival found the infant "lying on the floor unable to breathe," according to the felony assault charges filed Monday in Hennepin County District Court.

Dennis I. Taylor, the father, told the police that he fed the baby and "placed him in his car seat to sleep" before leaving the room, and when he came back, the baby "was not able to breathe and had vomited," according to the complaint.

The baby was transported to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale and then to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, where he underwent X-rays of his brain.

Dr. Alice Swenson reported the baby "suffered a severe brain injury" and there was "evidence of a prior brain injury," according to the charges. Swenson added this type of trauma could occur "if a baby is shaken or thrown."

The baby was pronounced brain-dead Sunday morning, and was being sustained by machines on Monday, according to the complaint.

Taylor, 20, is being held in the Hennepin County jail. According to the charges, authorities are asking for increased bail, because "the child is 'brain dead' and certain to die once [he] is removed from life-sustaining machinery."

The baby's injury happened in the same city and during the same week of another father-and-son injury case.

Late last week, Reggie Harper, 23, also of Brooklyn Park, was charged in the death of his 23-month-old son, Kazerion Harper. Kazerion 's death from blunt-force injuries late on Dec. 9 was ruled a homicide by the Hennepin County medical examiner.

Harper had been reported to child protection at least three times for child abuse since January 2012, records show.
