A repeat offender suspected of violating a court order triggered a 100-minute showdown with police in North Mankato — fleeing officers on Hwy. 169 and waving a gun from the window of his vehicle before shooting himself during a standoff with officers.

The incident started about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in North Mankato and ended a short distance to the south at roughly 1:10 a.m., police said.

The suspect, Brandon McMurtrey, 27, of North Mankato, was being treated for wounds at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, police said. His condition was not immediately known.

McMurtrey's criminal history in Minnesota spans nearly his entire adult life and includes convictions for fleeing police, receiving stolen property, theft, burglary, assault and disorderly conduct.

According to law enforcement authorities:

Police were called on suspicion that McMurtrey was violating a court order for protection. He fled as officers tried to stop him, and he brandished a handgun briefly before he got on southbound Hwy. 169.

He drove over police "stop sticks" at Hwy. 169 and S. Riverfront Drive, but kept going despite flat tires, turning around at County Road 33 and heading back toward North Mankato.

About 15 minutes into the chase, a State Patrol officer used his squad car to ram McMurtrey's vehicle off the road at the highway exit for S. Riverfront Drive.

McMurtrey waved his gun again from inside the vehicle. During negotiations with officers, McMurtrey shot himself and surrendered.
