Home | Local + Metro | The I-35W bridge collapse
Parkway drivers, don't start your engines just yet.
The opening of the Interstate 35W bridge is still on for 5 a.m. Thursday, but commuters who use West River Parkway will have to wait a few days for that road to open.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation had said the freeway bridge and the parkway would open at the same time. But MnDOT spokesman Kevin Gutknecht said Tuesday that the parkway needed more paving and would reopen a few days later than planned.
Paths along the parkway will open when the road does, he said.
West River Parkway is a popular commuter route into downtown for people who live in south Minneapolis and parts of St. Paul. Its pavement took a beating this spring when concrete bridge sections weighing up to 200 tons were hauled down to the Mississippi River along the parkway.
