A 92-car freight train traveling parallel to Hwy. 10 derailed before dawn Monday in Otter Tail County, pitching many of the cars off the tracks, a railroad official said.

The incident involving the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train occurred shortly after 6 a.m. between Wadena and Bluffton, said BNSF spokeswoman Amy McBeth. There were no injuries, and no hazardous materials were involved, McBeth said.

The eastbound train was carrying "freight of all kinds," with the cars that derailed hauling "primarily sugar products," McBeth said, based on initial reports from the scene. Of the 92 cars, 38 were empty, she said.

BNSF put the number of cars derailed at 32, while the Sheriff's Office count stood at 18 as of late Monday morning.

Officials have yet to say what led to the derailment.
