GOAL FOR 2008: $91.6 million. In 2007, $89.5 million was raised on a goal of $87.8 million.
WHEN: The campaign has started in some companies and ends Dec. 31. Most fund drives begin next month.
DONORS: About 150,000 individuals and companies will give to the United Way through 1,700 workplace pledge drives.
PAST CAMPAIGNS: Except for 2002 and 2006, donations have risen every year since the Minneapolis and St. Paul area United Way agencies joined in 2001, raising $85.4 million.
WHERE MONEY GOES: For the second year, about 80 percent will go to 10 targeted areas addressing hunger, homelessness, health care, access to education and family financial problems. The rest is directed by individual donors to specific agencies.
REPORT ON PROGRESS: The United Way will issue a report in mid-2009 on how it is meeting goals for the 10 areas, called the Agenda for Lasting Change.
WHAT'S NEW: More donors will be asked to volunteer time as well as donate money to combat community problems.
