Salvation Army volunteers in the Twin Cities will help 800 children in low-income families with their shopping for back-to-school clothing.
Another 350 volunteers are needed for the Leaders Launching Learners program, said Salvation Army spokeswoman Annette Bauer.
The shopping expedition is scheduled for Aug. 23 at nine stores across the metro area. Retailers include Wal-Mart, Target, Kohl's and Kmart.
The most pressing need for volunteers is in St. Paul at the Midway Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart stores in St. Anthony and Bloomington also have openings, as does the Target in Fridley.
Bauer said that each volunteer will escort one child through shopping aisles, helping the boy or girl pick out $100 worth of shoes, shirts and pants.
The Salvation Army has the money to fund the shopping, but a shortage of volunteers could limit the number of children receiving help, Bauer said.
"The signup is very easy since it is online," she said.
People or groups interested in volunteering can find specific locations online at www.thesalarmy.com or by calling 651-746-3400. Financial contributions to the program also are being accepted.
