Last update: July 30, 2008 - 11:58 PM

Hennepin Technical College has a new president.

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities board Wednesday backed Chancellor James McCormick's recommendation that Cecilia Y.M. Cervantes be named to the position.

Cervantes, 59, is president of the College of Alameda in Alameda, Calif. She previously was associate vice president for lifelong learning for the El Paso Community College District in Texas, provost of the Transmountain campus of the El Paso Community District, associate campus director for instruction and associate professor of reading at Dõna Ana Community College in New Mexico, and vice president of academic affairs at Western New Mexico University.

"Cervantes' leadership skills and experience are impressive," McCormick said. "They offer the right mix for Hennepin Technical College to continue its tradition of providing high-quality and state-of-the-art technical education programs."

Hennepin Technical College serves 8,200 students on its campuses in Eden Prairie and Brooklyn Park.
