The University of Minnesota will enforce new access hours Monday at 32 buildings on the East Bank campus.

The move is part of the university’s Building Access Program that began in February on the West Bank. The general public’s access to buildings will be reduced, while allowing students, faculty and staff some access.

The program creates three levels of access: public hours, university hours and restricted hours, said an e-mail sent Friday to students by Pam Wheelock, the U’s vice president for university services.

Buildings will remain open to the general public from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Classroom buildings will remain open until 7 p.m. for evening classes. Buildings may have different hours.

A U Card is required for access during university hours, which are immediately before and after public hours.

Buildings are closed to university students, faculty and staff and the general public during restricted hours, which are 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. for classroom buildings. Some people will have access to buildings during restricted hours.

The buildings affected are west of Church Street and north of Washington Avenue, according to Wheelock’s e-mail. A full list is available at www.uservices.umn.edu/assets/pdf/Access_Hours_Phase_III.pdf.

Restricted hours will roll out across the East Bank and St. Paul campus throughout the summer, with hopes of bringing all occupied university buildings on line by mid-August, Wheelock said in her e-mail.
