Driver who struck Green Line train in St. Paul cited for making U-turn

Metro Transit police ticketed a driver who collided with a Green Line light-rail train while making an improper U-turn during Friday's morning rush hour in St. Paul.

The motorist was heading eastbound on University and struck the side of the moving train while making the maneuver at Eustis Street around 8:20 a.m., said Metro Transit spokesman John Siqveland.

The train, which was on a training run, was in the intersection at the time of the crash and came to a stop on the overpass. It did block traffic.

Siqveland said the train sustained minor damage.  The operator was not seriously injured, he said.

Originally authorities classified the event as a hit-and-run crash as the driver had left the scene. But a Metro Transit supervisor located the driver and the vehicle a block away from the crash.

Metro Transit police ticked the driver for making the turn and for not having insurance.

This was the third crash involving a Green Line train since training runs began earlier this year.  The line will open on June 14 and run between downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul.
