A man and a woman in a car were killed in a head-on collision in northern Minnesota late Saturday night.

It happened in Cass County shortly after 11 p.m., just north of the Palace Casino Hotel, according to the State Patrol.

Killed were Lisa Collins, 47, of Cass Lake, Minn., and her passenger, Timothy Collins, 46, also of Cass Lake.

According to the patrol:

Lisa Collins was driving southbound on County Road 75 when her car was struck by a vehicle driven by Michael Stangel, 27, of Cass Lake. He had swerved into the southbound lane in a no-passing zone, near the intersection with Leech Lake Route 438, and had forced another driver off the road before the crash. The impact propelled Collins' car 100 feet before it stopped in the west ditch.

Stangel and his passenger, Stacy Stangel, 47, of Longville, Minn., were taken to Essentia Health-Fargo to be treated for serious injuries.

Nobody involved was wearing seat belts, and alcohol was detected in Michael Stangel's system, according to the patrol.

The pavement was dry at the time of the crash.
