ID released of man badly hurt after jumping onto moving semi

Last update: July 21, 2008 - 3:42 PM

A 24-year-old St. Cloud man attempted to jump onto a big rig leaving a Wright County gas station early today and severely hurt himself after he fell off the truck and was run over, authorities said.

Kelly L. Fischbach is at the Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition, according to the State Patrol.

The incident happened shortly after 3 a.m. at the Holiday convenience store at Ash Street and Hwy. 24 in Clearwater, the patrol said.

The semitrailer truck, being driven by Kevin P. Schweiger, of Big Lake Minn., was leaving the Holiday when Fischbach "attempted to jump onto the truck, slipped off and was run over," the patrol said.

Fischbach was among three people who had been left at the Holiday station after they had been having difficulties on a party bus, said patrol Lt. Bruce Pederson.

Schweiger told authorities that he "heard a thump on the passenger-side door" after Fischbach jumped onto his truck, Pederson said.

"Heavy alcohol use [by Fischbach] is probably involved here," Pederson said.
