Police in Duluth, Minn., have issued an arrest warrant for man they believe shot another man in the city on Sunday.
The suspect, Daniel Jophie Kriesel, 34, was charged Wednesday with shooting David Allen Goward at a residence on the 900 block of E. 5th Street, police said.
Goward's uncle, Dean, said that Goward is in an induced state of unconsciousness at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth. David Goward has undergone three surgeries since Sunday when a he was shot in the right chest.
The bullet hit his heart and lungs and traveled through his left kidney and into his intestine area, Dean Goward said.
Goward, a veteran of the Iraq war and a Purple Heart, was in critical condition Thursday.
According to Dean Goward, his nephew had recently met Kriesel through a friend of a friend of a friend type of thing. The two men were at Goward's residence in the East Hillside section of Duluth around 11 p.m. Dean Goward believes Kriesel saw David Goward's shot guns and decided to "make them mine." He allegedly shot Goward, Dean Goward said.
Neighbors came to the aid of a David Goward, who yelled for help. No one heard shots or any commotion, police said.
No one has been arrested, but police on Wednesday issued a warrant for Kriesel, He was charged Wednesday in St. Louis County District Court with one count of first-degree assault and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, said Deputy Chief John Beyer.
Kriesel, who has a St. Paul address, has previous felony convictions for a felon in possession of a firearm, vehicle theft, second-degree assault and a drug offense, records show. He had just been released from prison on June 12.
"David would have never been associated with him if he knew he was a career criminal," Dean Goward said.
