A St. Paul woman was charged with assault Monday after a man who tried to prevent her from driving drunk was injured after jumping onto the hood of her car as she drove toward him.

Felicia Remmen, 36, was charged in Ramsey County District Court with first- and second-degree assault in the incident in which Ronny Gray Jr., 25, was thrown from the moving vehicle and sustained head injuries. He was listed in fair condition at Regions Hospital on Monday after improving from critical condition.

According to the complaint:

Remmen was drinking with several other people around 3:30 p.m. Saturday at an apartment on the 700 block of Perlman Street where she worked as a personal care attendant when a woman she cared for, who also had been drinking, fell over. After neighbors called nurses who worked at the facility, the unresponsive woman was taken from the apartment by an ambulance.

A witness said that Remmen “freaked out” and wanted to know where the woman was taken. As Remmen got in a car and began to drive away, Gray, who is the stepfather of the woman’s 5-year-old grandson, arrived at the apartment to pick up the boy.

After Remmen started yelling at Gray and his wife, Gray asked someone if Remmen was drunk. Gray then stood in front of her car and told Remmen to take the keys out of the ignition. He also said that he was calling police.

At that point, Remmen stepped on the gas and Gray jumped onto the hood of the car. He stayed there as Remmen drove at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. He eventually fell off, hitting his head on the pavement. When medics arrived, they found Gray lying in a pool of blood. He was later diagnosed with several skull fractures.

Police arrested Remmen after she pulled over and failed a field sobriety test. She told police that she had a few shots of vodka, but didn’t remember leaving nor seeing Gray because she “drank a bit.”
