A St. Paul police SWAT member shot and injured a suspect after he fired at police during an arrest attempt Friday morning at a home on St. Paul's East Side, according to authorities.

The 37-year-old suspect was taken to Regions Hospital with noncritical injuries after he was shot in the arm about 10 a.m. at a residence in the 600 block of Maryland Ave. E. in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood. No officers were injured, said St. Police Chief Tom Smith, at an afternoon news conference.

"I think sometimes we take for granted … just how dangerous a job this can be," Smith said, about policing.

Members of the SWAT unit went to the home to arrest the man, who was wanted in connection with an aggravated assault investigation. After they announced that they were officers, police entered the home. At that time, the man raised a gun and fired at officers and then a SWAT member returned fire and struck the suspect.

The officer, who is a 15-year-veteran of the department, is on standard 3-day leave. The suspect and the officer have not yet been publicly identified.

The suspect is being investigated regarding an incident in the area of Edgerton Street and Maryland Avenue that took place on Tuesday around 2:30 p.m. A witness reported seeing a man fire two or three shots and then run through several yards carrying a handgun.

The suspect has not been formally booked, according to police.
