Even though the kids are still bundled for this chilly start to spring, March is the perfect time to tap trees for sap. At the Eastman Nature Center at Elm Creek Park Preserve in Osseo, 4-year-old Logan Hedden, right, learned how to use a drill to reach the sap in a maple tree on Sunday with the help of volunteer Les Kowal. Depending on weather conditions, sap might flow immediately after tapping. It takes at least 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup.
