6-year-old Bemidji girl died of exposure, autopsy finds

A 6-year-old girl found dead early Thursday morning in the entry of a Bemidji, Minn., apartment building died from exposure, authorities said Friday.

The body of the girl, whose name has not yet been released, was taken to St. Paul for an autopsy by the Ramsey County medical examiner’s office. The autopsy found the cause of death to be “hypothermia due to exposure to hypothermic conditions,” a statement from Bemidji Police Chief Mike Mastin said.

The girl was inside the front entrance to the Washington Ave Apartments, on Carter Circle SE. The Bemidji Pioneer reported she was in a jacket, boots, hat and mittens when emergency workers arrived.

The temperature at the time was 27 below, with a windchill that made it feel like 40 below.
