Minnetonka's City Council members and mayor will get pay raises — but not until 2016.

Last Monday, the City Council approved the new salaries, which haven't changed since 2008. Staff said the increases were due to be in line with surrounding cities, boosting council members' annual pay from $9,000 to $11,000 and the mayor's salary from $12,000 to $15,000 a year.

According to the League of Minnesota Cities, the market average for council members is $10,189 while the average for mayors is $13,541. Minnetonka's raises will take effect Jan. 1, 2016, after the next general election.

Nearby, Wayzata is also considering raises for city officials, but no action has been taken. Salaries have been the same since 1996, with the mayor receiving $4,500 and City Council members receiving $3,000.
