A former Maple Grove High School student was shot and killed in his apartment over the weekend near the campus of Michigan State University, where he was a sophomore, authorities said.

Dominique "D.J." Nolff, and roommate Corbin Holwerda, 20 of Grand Haven, Mich., were shot Friday night in the Cedar Village Apartments, police in East Lansing said.

Nolff died the next day at Sparrow Hospital from multiple gunshot wounds, police said. Holwerda was treated and released from the hospital for a single gunshot wound.

The shooter has yet to be located. Police only had a vague description of the man, believed to be 20 to 25 years old.

"The shooting does not appear to be a random act," police said in a statement.

Nolff was studying hospitality business at MSU.

Nolff was a running back for Maple Grove in football and a guard on the basketball team. He moved to Middleville, Mich., and graduated from Thornapple Kellogg High School in 2012.

"MSU stands by to assist the East Lansing Police Department, who is leading the investigation and have said the incident is not a random act," MSU spokesman Kent Cassella said in a statement.
