A man shot and wounded by Brooklyn Park police over the weekend was speeding in reverse in a car aimed at the officer who opened fire, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday.

Shoua Yang, 22, of Minneapolis, was charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree assault in the confrontation Saturday in the parking lot of the Buasavanh Banquet Hall in the 7300 block of Lakeland Avenue N.

Yang remains in police custody while being treated at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis for injuries from the shooting.

The complaint and Brooklyn Park police identified the officer who fired as Jason Chadbourne, 23, who joined the force nine months ago.

According to the complaint:

A fight among 10 males, some with broken bottles, erupted outside the hall shortly after 11 p.m. Police officers arrived, prompting some in the group to run toward a car in the lot.

Chadbourne chased those fleeing and ordered them out of the car. Yang drove in reverse and sped toward the officer.

Chadbourne fired numerous shots at the car because he "was in a position where he was in danger of being pinned between the defendant's vehicle and the row of vehicles behind him," the complaint said. Amid the gunfire, Yang veered away from Chadbourne.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office has led the investigation at the request of Brooklyn Park police.
