Walters, a co-creator of “The View” and TV legend who is set to retire, asked Abdi: “How do you feel about Tom Hanks not being nominated for a Golden Globe because I thought he was just wonderful.”

Abdi evenly said “Yeah, he actually was nominated for the Golden Globes. You mean the Oscars? That’s how we all feel.”

Walters isn’t necessarily slipping, but it’s not difficult to correct her these days. However, it should be noted that she has forgotten more than most of us will ever know. Hanks has won two Oscars, so I think he’ll be OK.

Abdi, a humble, remarkably facile interviewee, said he learned how to swim after getting this role.

When asked about members of the Somali community being concerned this movie role might be an embarrassment, Abdi said: “I don’t see anybody talking about that nowadays. Everyone likes the movie; likes our performances.”
