Authorities have identified both the man who was shot to death and the gunman who then killed himself in Otter Tail County.
A murder-suicide in Otter Tail County was rooted in jealousy and was sparked when a woman went to her ex-boyfriend’s home with her new beau to claim her pet dog, authorities said Tuesday.
It was on the night of July 31 when the woman and the two men were in the home east of New York Mills that Jacob Geiser, 23, fatally shot Ethan M. Honer, 20, of Dent, Minn., before turning the gun on himself in what Sheriff Brian Schlueter characterized an “ex-girlfriend situation.”
“The woman came to pick up her dog and brought along the new boyfriend,” Schlueter said. “[Geiser] wasn’t supposed to be home.”
The woman called 911 to report the gunfire she witnessed at the home in the 57300 block of Hwy. 56. Sheriff’s deputies and emergency medical personnel arrived and determined that Honer was dead at the scene.
Geiser was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Wadena and then flown to St. Cloud Hospital, where he died.
