JANESVILLE, Wis. — Police in Janesville say a man was acting in self-defense when he shot two of his neighbor's dogs, killing one of them.

A press release on Sunday from the Janesville Police Department says the dogs were shot in man's one-car garage. The Janesville Gazette reports that officers responded to the shooting on Saturday night (http://bit.ly/1cetsIP).

Police say the two "pit bull type" dogs charged at the man, who retreated into his garage. The surviving dog fled and was taken by its owner to a veterinarian.

Police say evidence in the case support the man's story that he was cornered by the dogs.
