St. Paul's newest firefighters helped their neighbors in a northern suburb as part of their training.

The Firefighter Academy Class of 2008 graduates in a ceremony Friday at the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Center in St. Paul.

Sixteen new recruits completed 12 weeks of intensive training in firefighting, rescue techniques, emergency medical services, and hazardous materials emergencies.

They also recently spent a day assisting with the clean-up of tornado-ravaged Hugo as part of their preparation and training.

The new class now puts the number of firefighters in St. Paul at 407.
