The driver who allegedly rammed his SUV into a car killing a 70-year-old woman in a weekend hit-and-run accident in Minneapolis was charged Tuesday.

Mee Lor, of Minneapolis, was injured in an accident Saturday at Fremont and 21st Avenues N. before she died about 2 p.m. at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office.

According to criminal charges, Lor was seated in the rear passenger side of a Toyota Camry her grandson was driving. Her grandson told police that he had turned onto Fremont Avenue N. and headed south. Lor’s grandson said he saw an SUV coming up behind him “very fast” and that the SUV struck his car causing it to spin and hit a tree.

Witnesses confirmed the grandson’s report and said that the SUV was traveling “very fast” on Fremont heading south over the hill at the intersection and struck the Toyota. The SUV then fled the scene, witnesses said.

Based on license plate information obtained from witnesses, officers were able to identify the SUV’s driver as Perry Bernard Atkins, 24, of Brooklyn Park. Atkins’ driver’s license had been suspended at the time of the accident.

According to the complaint, Atkins admitted to police that he struck the Toyota. He said that he had been behind another vehicle which stopped suddenly causing him to swerve into the west lane of Fremont Avenue and strike the Toyota. According to the complaint, Atkins said he left the scene because he was scared. After leaving the scene, Atkins said he and a passenger abandoned the car parked in the area of N. 23rd Avenue and N. 3rd Street and decided to report it stolen.

Atkins is being charged with criminal vehicular homicide.
