Continued: Two men shot by woman, who then took aim at state troopers

A woman believed to have shot two men inside a northern Minnesota residence early Monday allegedly took aim at state troopers who tried to pull her over in neighboring Becker County, said Hubbard County Sheriff Gary Mills.

The suspect fired one shot out of the rear window of her car toward troopers, who stopped her but remained in their vehicle while waiting for backup. The troopers were not hit, and with help from more than six officers from three other agencies, they arrested the woman without further incident. They also confiscated two guns.

Hubbard County sheriff's deputies were called to a residence 12 miles north of Park Rapids about 1 a.m. on a call of shots fired. When they arrived, authorities found two men who had been shot with a .22-caliber rifle.

An 18-year-old man with thigh wounds was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids, and a 21-year-old man who suffered a hand wound was taken to a hospital in Detroit Lakes.

The suspect had a "domestic relationship" with one of the men who lived at the residence, Mills said, but he was not sure which one. "He was trying to end it," the sheriff said.

Minnesotan missing in Alaska national park

Ground and air crews were searching nearly 100 square miles of Alaska's Denali National Park on Monday for two women, one of them a Minnesotan, missing on what was supposed to be a short backpacking trip.

Searchers with dogs planned to arrive Monday to help look for Abby Flantz, 25, of Gaylord, Minn., and Erica Nelson, 23, of Las Vegas. They were reported overdue Saturday after they did not show up for work at a hotel outside the park.

The women were last seen Thursday at the Savage River check station about 15 miles from park headquarters; they had planned to return Friday.

The area being searched consists of rugged terrain without trails ranging in elevation from approximately 2,000 feet to 6,000 feet. The women are experienced trail hikers but have limited experience with Alaska back-country conditions.

Father, 74, held in shooting of daughter, 34

A 74-year-old father is being held in the shooting of his 34-year-old daughter near Sleepy Eye, in southern Minnesota, over the weekend, authorities said.

During Mark Peter Jensen's appearance in Brown County District Court on Monday, it was revealed that he is suffering from brain cancer, and that it's causing him psychological difficulties. Jensen was charged with first-degree assault and released on a promise to reappear.

The Brown County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call Saturday morning from a woman, who said her husband had shot their daughter in the stomach. Officers from the Sheriff's Office and two nearby police departments responded and took the man into custody.

The motive for the shooting was unclear. A .22-caliber rifle was recovered at the scene.

The daughter, Brenda Runck, was in stable condition at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.

Fire imperils more than 300 carcasses

The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of a weekend fire at a meat processing plant in Buffalo Lake, Minn.

No one was hurt in Saturday's fire at the Minnesota Beef Industries plant, but it caused extensive damage. Fire Chief Gayle Deal said damages could reach $2 million.

Hanging carcasses were exposed to smoke, and it's possible that more than 300 carcasses will have to be destroyed, Deal said. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will make the final decision.
