Many private and government agencies offer help with food through a variety of programs, including food shelves and food stamps.
To find a nearby food shelf or a summer food program for school-age children, or to donate time or money, call Hunger Solutions Minnesota at 651-486-9860 or go to www.hungersolutions.org.
Apply for food stamps through county social service offices. In Minnesota, about 295,000 people receive an average monthly benefit of $90, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. About 40 percent of low-income Minnesotans who are eligible have not applied.
For information, call the Minnesota Food Support hotline: 651-431-4050 in the metro area, or 1-800-657-3698 elsewhere. For TTY service, call the Minnesota Relay at 711 or 1-800-627-3529.
