Erection of the main span for the new 35W bridge will soon begin and "significant thumping" is anticipated in the area near downtown as old freeway road bed near the bridge site is broken up, transportation officials said today.

Crews have finished concrete pouring for the bridge decks on the south side approach spans for the bridge, clearing the way for the first pair of main span segments to be erected this week over the Mississippi River.

Also this week, crews will also begin demolition of the old road bed on the portion of Interstate Hwy. 35W on the south side of the river.

"This work will involve the use of equipment to break up the old roadway so it can be rebuilt," the state Department of Transportation said in a statement. "As a result, significant thumping noise may occur. This work will take place 24 hours a day and could last as long as four weeks."

The 35W bridge collapsed on Aug. 1, killing 13 and injuring more than 100.
