Children and grief

Last update: May 17, 2008 - 12:28 AM

When a family member or a friend dies, children and teenagers may feel an overwhelming loss. While the pain may ease over time, new awareness of loss may arise unexpectedly for the rest of their lives.

Without a chance to process the grief over years, students may get stuck with only the understanding they had at the time of the death -- say, a 7-year-old girl's shattering loss of her father.

Caring adults can help by being open, honest, caring and patient. In addition, many hospitals, clergy and therapists offer support groups for families and sometimes for children.
