Last update: May 15, 2008 - 10:36 PM

A 73RD STATE PARK?

Where: 100 miles north of Duluth

How big: Roughly 2,500 acres, adding 5 miles of shoreline.

Status: Currently not in any spending bills.

Why now: U.S. Steel has given the state until July to act. The company otherwise will build more than 100 luxury homes on the tract.

Estimated total cost: Between $35 million and $100 million.

Historic fact: It would be the first major new state park since Tettegouche opened on Lake Superior in 1979.
