Last update: May 15, 2008 - 8:05 AM

A bicyclist is in critical condition after he collided with a car Wednesday afternoon in Burnsville, the State Patrol said.

Ralph Burns, 79, of Apple Valley, was riding his mountain bike eastbound on Hwy. 13 around 2:45 p.m. when he attempted to cross to the shoulder on the ramp leading to northbound Interstate Hwy. 35W. A motorist on the ramp skidded to avoid hitting the bicyclist, who then collided with the car, the patrol said.

Burns, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis with a head injury.

The driver of the car, Jolayne Lange, 47, of Farmington, was not hurt.

The incident is under investigation.
